Will New NTSB Proposals Do Harm?

The National Transportation Safety Board is an investigative agency with almost no actual power besides the ability to ask questions about serious transportation-related incidents and crashes. Because it doesn't have any actual rule-making authority, it has a well deserved reputation for true independence. Recently, it has suggested that all people on airplanes, even children under 2 years of age, be…See More

"One of the weirdest things I had to get used to when I lived in Pennsylvania was the idea that I couldn't buy a six pack at the gas station. I had heard about dry counties when I lived in Texas, but the idea that I had to go to a special store…"

"Weirdly, I find myself more market-oriented than the guy from the Competitive Enterprise Institute. I'm surprised, Eli, that you frame this issue almost entirely in terms of its utility for government. But if government got out of the business…"

Private Booze? Maybe.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has announced he wants to privatize state liquor stores as part of a plan to interject more funding into Virginia's transportation infrastructure. On it's surface, it's a good idea: as McDonnell has said, there's really no reason for the government to run liquor stores in the first place while there's a clear role for government in building transportation…See More

Sarbox: Work the system

Some libertarian groups are trying to claim a "victory" for on a challenge to the Sarbanes-Oxley Law launched by the Free Enterprise Fund and the law firm Jones Day. Technically, in that the court did decide in favor of the "right" side since it ruled that the a tiny part of the law violated the Constitution's appointments clause. But the entire government-knows-best, overbearing structure of the law has remained in force. Quite simply, the challenge to the law was flawed from it's inception. A…See More

Alvin Greene: Where Have We Seen This Before?

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), is calling for an investigation into his states' voters decision to anoint one Alvin Greene as the Democratic nominee for Senate. Greene, a military veteran with a ill-defined past, no job, no active campaign, and no visible base of support was one of three "mystery" candidates who ran in South Carolina…See More

Worst. WaPo Story. Ever.

Today’s Washington Post it runs a front page story that must rank as one of the least newsy, worst reported, and most misleading things I’ve ever ready in a well-known newspaper. Here’s the run-down: in the wake of Rand Paul’s stupid comments about the 1964 Civil Rights Act--arguably the most important a worthy piece of federal legislation of the second half of the 20th century—the Post dispatched a reporter to investigate Kentucky’s private clubs. Here’s what she found: in the reasonably…See More

""But take it with a grain of salt." But not too much salt, of course. Be mindful of unwritten FDA guidelines. Maybe consult your doctor before clicking on that link. In fact, maybe consult your doctor before reading this comment... Ooops."

Worst Inventions. . .Maybe

Time Magazine lists the 50 worst inventions of all time. Overall, it’s a pretty good list. Most of Time's picks are really annoying things like spam e-mail, greatly over-hyped if nominally useful inventions like the Segway, and “why-would-anyone-ever-buy-that” devices like Smell-o-Vision. But there are a few genuinely useful things on the list. Let’s begin with DDT. While the pesticide does…See More

Bad Foods? Nah.

The killjoy ninnies who run the Center for Science in the Public Interest have launched their annual all-out attack on "unhealthy" restaurant fare. You can read the coverage here. Certainly, nothing on their list is health food. But, as is typical for this band of killjoys, they overstate their case. I've had almost all of the items on CSPI's…See More

What do you spend on food?

It has little to do with libertarianism but I'm intrigued by this chart showing food and drink consumption by city. There are some obvious economic significance to this--poorer cities spend less than wealthier ones--but I think it's very interesting that the state of a city's food culture has very little to do with spending or even home/eating out. Can anyone quickly name an Atlanta specialty other than…See More

Alice in Wonderland: Drug Dealer?

On a cross-country flight yesterday evening, I watched Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland. I'm hardly the first to note Burton's source material--replete with a hookah (bong) smoking caterpillar, talking animals, and a generally twisted world view--seems pretty much like a drug trip. But did anyone notice the end of the movie? In Burton's version (which tells a story based… Continue
