Although gun-free zones are a wonderful idea, they only work if they are coupled with metal detectors backed up by armed guards. The Sandy Hook Elementary school became a magnet for evildoing because Adam Lanza knew he would be able to murder at will with little threat of being fired upon.
There is also the psychology of mass shooters that demands control of the victims and the situation. A common denominator in most of the mass shooting has been mental illness. As with Adam Lanza he committed suicide when confronted by the police, rather than to be stopped against his will in his senseless killing spree. With the Colorado movie shooter, James Holms, he calmly waited outside for the police to arrest him, possibly in order to maintain some degree of control short of suicide to end the incident on his own terms.
In the mid 1960's, many of the killing would have been prevented because the severely mentally ill would have been confined and cared for in a state institution. Now they are out on the streets; many of them are homeless.
Question for consideration:
1. Does the president have armed guards to protect his family?
2. Are other officials protected by armed guards?
3. Do armed US Marshals provide protection to passengers who are children on airplanes?
4. Isn't school safety as important for children as airplane safety?
5. What about liberal politicians who have dismantled the laws that keep violent mental cases on the street and in their homes instead of where they can get help?
For consideration by those who advocate the ban of assault weapons: "Laws do not curb the lawless and neither do gun control laws." After all, that's why we call them lawless! http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Joel.Miller.Quote.34B6
This is not to make light of the senseless Newtown killings, but why is there not a peep from the media how 446 school age children were actually killed by craze nuts in Chicago so far this year with almost two weeks to go? How could this be? Might it embarrass the strident anti-second amendment individuals who like to brag about Chicago's tough gun laws? Might it also be that the kids shot and killed were minorities? And what about Chicagoland's corrupt liberal media that doesn't want to show Chicago in a bad light, now run by Rahm Emanuel, as the town that produced Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, and David Axelrod? http://clashdaily.com/2012/12/chicago-446-school-age-children-shot-...
Considers Great Britain: Despite a ban on guns. it's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union. Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S., even South Africa, widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries. There are 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in the UK. The U.S. has a violent crime rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 resident. Canada ranks above the U.S. with 935 crimes per 100,000 residents. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196941/The-violent-country...
Announced by President on December 19 is that Joe Biden will spearhead an inter-agency panel to develop policies in the wake of the Newtown elementary shooting. The rush is on to reach a conclusion in January of 2013. Being of Pennsylvania Deutch ancestry, Thorner grew up in a household which emphasized this brief and simple proverb: "Haste makes waste."
As with the gun issue, rushing to legislate gun legislation will result in errors that require correction or in the creation of solutions that are not practical and will instead lead to more harm than good. minutemennews.com/2012/12/biden-to-head-post-newtown-shooting-review-of-u-s-policy
So it will be if liberal lawmakers continue to use Newtown as the impetus for encroaching upon 2nd amendment rights as a means to enact their political agenda. May saner heads prevail.
It is human conceit that man can prevent the unpreventable. Not one law now being proposed would have stopped the Newtown massacre, known as a safe community.
Once our 2nd Amendment rights are gone, what else can the government decide what we can or cannot do?
